Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway Movie Review

Plot

The film revolves around Debika Chatterjee (Rani Mukerji), a Bengali housewife living in Norway with her husband and two children. The Norwegian Childcare Services take her children away based on cultural differences like eating with hands and sharing beds. Debika embarks on a long fight against the system to get her children back.

Acting

Rani Mukerji delivers a riveting performance as Debika Chatterjee. However, her shrill and screechy take on the character doesn't bode well. Anirban Bhattacharya's Anirudh is relegated to being the bad guy without any explanation. Jim Sarbh's fine portrayal of a lawyer holds the film together.

Cinematography

The film is beautifully shot with picturesque locations of Norway's Northern Lights, colourful jamdani saris and pujo that depict Debika's Bengali heritage. The film's score by Amit Trivedi embodies the spirit of a fearless mother.

Direction

Director Ashima Chibber fails to empathize with Debika's journey. The film feels like hollow theatrics instead of feeling her desperation and despair. The film misses the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the culture clash and the pain of a mother whose children have been taken away.

Verdict

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is emotionally charged and a heart-wrenching tale of a mother's journey to be reunited with her kids. However, the uneven execution and one-dimensional characterisation of the supporting cast fall short of expectations. The film is worth a watch for Rani Mukerji's earnest attempt to bring Debika Chatterjee to life.
