Taaza Khabar Review: Bhuvan Bam Shines, But the Story Fails to Impress

Plot

Taaza Khabar follows the story of Vasant Gawde, aka Vasya, a man who collects money in a pay-and-use lavatory. His life is stuck in a rut, with an alcoholic father, a loving mother who is ready to steal for the sake of her son, and his one true love, Madhu, who works as a sex worker. However, a miracle changes his life, giving him surreal powers to crack news before it happens in the real world. Vasya uses his newfound superpower to master his destiny, but things soon spiral out of control.

Acting

Bhuvan Bam impresses in his debut acting role, bringing out Vasya's vivid emotions on-screen. Shriya Pilgaokar lends due support as Madhu, Vasya's love interest, and the two share an endearing on-screen chemistry. Shilpa Shukla, who plays brothel owner Aapa, has a limited role but makes her presence felt. JD Chakravarthi plays a menacing character convincingly, while Deven Bhojani shines in a serious role after a long gap.

Cinematography

The production values of Taaza Khabar are decent, and the show features some good visual effects. When Vasya's life takes a turn for the better, viewers can quickly notice changes in the background, places, and other surroundings.

Direction

Directed by Himank Gaur, Taaza Khabar is a comedy-drama that struggles to rise above a hackneyed story. While the show starts promisingly, it quickly becomes predictable, leaving viewers wondering where it's all going. The central conceit of the show may be unusual, but in terms of the characters and the plot details, it's as stale as yesterday's news.

Overall Verdict

Taaza Khabar may be an interesting watch for the way it narrates the everyday life of a simpleton with big dreams. However, it fails to deliver a fresh take on the rags-to-riches genre. The series could have done with more magic, as the screenplay remains thin and laboured, lacking an iota of genuine insight. Bhuvan Bam's acting skills shine, but the contrived storyline and lack of genuine inspiration and novelty drag the show down. Overall, Taaza Khabar is a decent binge-worthy show.
