Sukhee: Movie Review
Plot
Sukhee revolves around the life of Sukhpreet Kalra, a middle-class Punjabi housewife in her 40s. After receiving an invitation to her high school reunion, Sukhee reminisces about her carefree teenage years and the woman she used to be before getting married. She decides to break free from her domestic life and revisit her past, much to the dismay of her husband and daughter. The film explores Sukhee's journey of self-discovery and her struggle to reclaim her self-worth.
Acting
In the role of Sukhee, Shilpa Shetty Kundra delivers a commendable performance. However, she lacks the acting depth and nuance displayed by actresses like Sridevi in English Vinglish or Vidya Balan in Tumhari Sulu. The supporting cast has limited screen time but manages to make an impact, particularly Chaitanya Choudhry and Kusha Kapila.
Cinematography
The cinematography in Sukhee is visually appealing, with vibrant colors and well-composed shots. The film successfully captures the contrast between Sukhee's mundane domestic life and the vibrant energy of her past.
Direction
Sonal Joshi's direction in Sukhee is commendable, especially for addressing the theme of female friendship and desire without relying on clichéd plotlines centered around romance or sexuality. Joshi navigates through the challenges of depicting a middle-class housewife's struggle with subtlety and manages to evoke emotions and provoke thoughts.
Overall Verdict
Sukhee is a film that tackles the common issue of married women struggling to find their identity and self-worth. While the plot may seem familiar, Sonal Joshi's direction and Shilpa Shetty Kundra's performance elevate the film. There are heartwarming moments and thought-provoking messages about societal expectations, but the film falls short in some areas, particularly with its runtime and inconsistent pacing. Nonetheless, Sukhee offers a relatable and enjoyable cinematic experience.
