Movie Review: Jayeshbhai Jordaar
Plot
Jayeshbhai Jordaar is a social comedy focused on gender stereotypes, disparity, and female foeticide. It follows the story of Jayesh, a timid father, who decides to be the action hero his daughter wants and needs. With his wife pregnant and his ruthless and patriarchal parents willing to do anything to get a grandson, Jayeshbhai must empower the women of his village and fight against the beti-nahi-beta chahiye samaaj.Acting
Ranveer Singh puts in a wholehearted performance, yet the script lets him down. He brings out the diminutive, pushover presence of Jayeshbhai, his accent, and his gradual triumph. He tries hard, and his energy and relentless effort to entertain keep you hopeful till the end. Shalini Pandey, who we saw as a demure and timid lover in Telugu film Arjun Reddy, is impressive in parts but never gets the chance to grow her character arc. Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah both play their parts with brilliance. The child actors Jai Vaidya and Deeskha Joshi are the cutest takeaways.Cinematography
The film is set in Gujarat and showcases the state's unique and beautiful culture through its cinematography. The quaintness and quirks, signs and stereotypes of the region are highlighted well.Direction
Divyang Thakkar's direction is commendable as he creates a borderline dystopian world focused on condemning the evils in society. He uses humour as a device to highlight the issues of female foeticide and deeply entrenched misogyny that perpetuates it. He lightens up a serious situation in a manner that's both ironic and telling, making the film play like an on-the-run road trip.Verdict
Jayeshbhai Jordaar may not pull off a KGF or Kashmir Files in terms of box office collection, but it's a film that will touch the heart. The movie uses humour as a device to condemn the evils in society. Essentially, a message movie, Jayeshbhai Jordaar masks its horror in humour, which may not land all the time. However, the film benefits from emotional performances from its cast, particularly Ranveer Singh.Share this review
