Movie Review: Plan A Plan B

Plot

In 'Plan A Plan B,' Nirali Vora (Tamannaah Bhatia) is a matchmaker who doesn't believe in marriage, and Kaustubh Chougule (Riteish Deskmukh) is a divorce lawyer who doesn't believe in fixing what's broken. When these two polar opposites meet, their mutual hatred adds curiosity to their characters. The premise written by Rajat Aroraa offers a perfect setup for romance and comedy, but lacks depth in the lead couple's past stories. The pacing is slow, but consistent with moments that will stay with you.

Acting

Riteish Deshmukh is at his best form portraying the cynical character Kosty in measured tones. Tamannaah Bhatia successfully brings the vulnerability and fierceness of Nirali to the fore, and Poonam Dhillon performs well in her limited screen time as Nirali's mother. The rest of the cast play cliched roles as Nirali and Kosty's friends, except for Prithviraj Uday Sarnaik’s Kabeer who is one of the most entertaining characters in the film.

Cinematography

The film is directed by Shashanka Ghosh who fails to recreate the magic of his previous film, 'Veere Di Wedding.' The soundtrack, however, packs quite a punch into this romantic drama.

Direction

Ghosh is unable to capture the magic of the rom-com formula in this movie that skims the surface of matters of the heart. The script presents an uninspired take on the cliché opposites-attracted-to-each-other plot and delivers a facile tale that revolves around a matchmaker and a divorce lawyer who share a workspace. The twists and turns, if any, are superficial, and the pacing is slow.

Verdict

For people to believe that "opposites attract," this 106-minute film is as formulaic as it is ambitious. The movie doesn't come close to the cult romantic flicks that you can curl up with anytime, but it's not a bad idea to watch 'Plan A Plan B' once to get a sneak peek into the lives of two people who are diametrically opposed.
