Abhay Season 3 Review: A Mainstream Exhibition of Torture Porn

Plot

Abhay follows the story of Abhay Pratap Singh, a superintendent of police who has to get in touch with his inner bestiality to solve a series of gruesome crimes happening in and around the Delhi-NCR area. Season 3 features two sets of killings, one involving good-looking murderers, and the other involving a ghoulish creature from a satanic cult led by Vijay Raaz. The show trades on violence and gore to provide entertainment to a desensitized audience, lacking the depth of a genuinely curious artist.

Acting

Kunal Kemmu embodies the character of Abhay Pratap Singh with equal parts ruthlessness and vulnerability, making the audience root for him. Vijay Raaz excels in his role as the charismatic cult leader, despite the shallow writing. Rahul Dev's role is underwhelming, leaving much to be desired. The rest of the cast manage to hold their own without making an indelible mark.

Cinematography

The show's aesthetic of killing is its driving force, with unimaginative shots. The visuals are reminiscent of Sin City and video game graphics, with transitions between scenes deliberately choppy and chase sequences filmed to appeal to Parkour lovers. The production design paints a picture of gorgeously shot violence that the audience can cheer.

Direction

Director Ken Ghosh's major interest lies in showcasing how the law-and-order mechanism cannot function and resorting to vigilante tactics. The writing comes across as lazy and lacks deep characterizations, leaving gaping plot holes and making the cops appear incompetent. The writers diluted the strength of the show that made it engaging in earlier seasons, by taking away the individual case-of-the-episode format from its third season.

Final Verdict

Abhay Season 3 is a mainstream exhibition of torture porn that lacks the depth to become anything more. While it tones down on gore and violence, the show still indulges in violence that is meant to excite a desensitized audience. The lack of depth in characters and plot makes it a difficult watch at times. The show is a classic example of how artists should not simply take macabre news reports and use them as backdrops for their creations.
