Plot

Adipurush is a screen adaptation of Valmiki's Ramayana, with a focus on Sita's abduction by Ravan and Ram's battle to rescue her. The film mixes an epic story with a superhero-verse execution, pitting Ram's army against Ravan's immortality.

Acting

Prabhas as Raghav is strong and mighty, while Kriti Sanon as Janaki has beautiful chemistry with him. Sunny Singh as Shesh has a handful of moments but mainly supports Prabhas. Devdatta Nage as Adipurush's Bajrangbali has been written with a dash of safe humour. Saif Ali Khan as Raavana does a decent job, creating a sense of terror associated with the mythological character.

Cinematography

The film's VFX and visual appeal are passable but not impressive. The 3D feels unnecessary, and the special effects sometimes cover up unfinished fight scenes with dust or explosions.

Direction

Om Raut attempts to balance the epic story with a modern superhero-verse execution. However, the dialogue lacks the impact that epic heroes of this stature are expected to deliver. The narration is a bit bland in the first half and fails to evoke the emotional gravity that one would expect from an epic story like Ramayana.

Overall Verdict

Adipurush tries to reinvent an already popular epic tale with its superhero-verse execution but falls short. The film is engaging in its second half, but the first half lacks thrill and urgency. Saif Ali Khan's portrayal of Ravan is the saving grace of the film, while Prabhas maintains a heroic presence as Ram. The music and background score are delightful. If you really want to enjoy it then maybe you will have to not think about epicness as dialogues and looks of characters might disappoint you.
