Afwaah: A Timely and Thought-Provoking Political Drama

Plot

The film's plot is set in Sawalpur, a small town in Rajasthan, and it revolves around politician Vicky Banna (Sumeet Vyas) and his fiery speech that polarizes the people of the town. A communal clash ensues, and innocent lives are lost. In a bid to save his political career and reputation, Vicky starts a rumor on social media, which soon goes viral. Rahab Ahmed (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Nivi (Bhumi Pednekar) are caught up in this mess and have to run for their lives while karma catches up with Vicky.

Acting

With actors like Bhumi Pednekar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Sharib Hashmi, Afwaah boasts of a strong cast with nuanced performances from each of them. Sumeet Vyas is a true revelation, delivering a flawless performance that showcases his range as an actor. Bhumi shines with her bold and cocky attitude, which contrasts sharply with Nawaz's restrained demeanor. Hashmi and Sumit Kaul (as Inspector Sandeep) play evil characters convincingly.

Cinematography

Cinematographer Mauricio Vidal adeptly captures the essence of Rajasthan, including its dark alleys and the beautifully captured Nahargarh Fort.

Direction

Sudhir Mishra's direction is impeccable as he expertly weaves a gripping political drama around the hazards and consequences of rumors and grapevines, especially in the age of social media. His nuanced and liberal voice and social consciousness reflect in his works, especially in Afwaah.

Music

The song 'Aaj Yeh Basant,' by Rajasthani folk singer Mame Khan and Sunetra Banerjee, has a profound ring to it and underlines life’s ironies.

Verdict

Afwaah is a timely and thought-provoking film that examines the reach and repercussions of the rumor-mongering industry in a society that is quick to assume and polarize. The film's events are all around us, and Mishra expertly pieces them together to highlight the hypocrisy and predict hazardous times for everyone on the social hierarchy. Though the climax seems a tad convenient, it doesn't take away from the film's powerful social commentary.
