Movie Review: Attack

Plot

Attack is a sci-fi action thriller that explores a new aspect in the action domain. Arjun Shergill (John Abraham), an Indian Army officer, ends up on a wheelchair after being shot by terrorists during an attack. A year later, he agrees to an AI experiment and becomes India's first super soldier. When Parliament comes under attack, Arjun is given the responsibility to stop a dirty bomb from exploding and destroying Delhi. The story is engaging and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

Acting

John Abraham is truly at his best as a soldier who wears his love for the country in Attack like a comfortable suit. He effortlessly turns from a romantic lover to a soldier and plays both parts with conviction. Jacqueline Fernandez and Rakul Preet Singh do justice to their roles, while Prakash Raj and Ratna Pathak Shah land up with badly written roles that don't add much value to the movie.

Cinematography

The VFX used in Attack is simply brilliant. It captivates you from the beginning and takes full advantage of technological advancements in the digital world. However, towards the end, it gets too much and could have been toned down a bit. The well-crafted and beautifully shot action sequences are a visual treat. The use of visual effects gives most of the film the feel of a combat game.

Direction

Debutant director Lakshya Raj Anand's Attack: Part One sets up a universe where India is at the cusp of change, in terms of attitude and approach. He creatively and slickly engages artificial intelligence as a character involved in the story. For that, he deserves a round of applause. The movie is drawn out of a few real-life happenings, has a fair dose of edge-of-the-seat moments, and doesn't digress into song-and-dance situations.

Overall Verdict

For India's first super-soldier film, Attack stands well with its VFX and new concepts, all coated in a layer of slick modern sci-fi. The screenplay is seamless and the drama and shenanigans keep you entertained throughout. John Abraham is impressive in Attack, but sadly, the story is not. The supporting cast hardly adds any value to the movie, and the whole 'terrorists attacking India' plot is a bit overdone. But that being said, not many filmmakers would have the courage to attempt something like this at all. If you love action and John Abraham, give this film a watch.
