Bloody Brothers Review: A Second-Rate Remake Salvaged by Two Excellent Lead Actors

Plot

Bloody Brothers is a Hindi remake of the Western series Guilt. Hotshot lawyer Jagjeet and his bookstore-running brother Daljeet hit elderly Samuel Alvarez with their car, cover up the crime, and drag Samuel back to his room. They hope the police will conclude that Samuel died a natural death. But things get messy when Samuel’s niece Sophie shows up in town. As Jagjeet encourages Daljeet to flirt with Sophie, Sheila witnesses the car accident, and Jagjeet’s wife Priya starts a relationship with her fitness trainer Tanya. The plot quickly becomes complicated with gangsters and Dushyant, a perpetually drunk associate.

Acting

Jaideep Ahlawat and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub are the two leads who save the show with their excellent acting. They turn poorly written scenes into amusing little set-pieces. Shruti Seth’s character also stands out with just the right mix of longing and fear. Maya Alagh, playing a self-pitying hag, stands out in sequences with Ahlawat. Satish Kaushik also performs well with his depiction of a self-glorifying monster, Handasaab. However, the writing is so flat that the entire cast is simply lost.

Cinematography

Ooty is atmospheric for a quaint mystery, but as the story slowly grows more complex and involves gangsters, Ooty starts to feel quite awkward. The lovemaking scenes lack heat, and the lovemaking feels set to a soundtrack. The small talk scenes do not have the bite of bungled speech or overlapping dialogues.

Direction

Shaad Ali’s direction is limp and unimaginative. The show is flattened, unremarkable, plodding, and a drag. The writing being so flat, the characters appear to have no inner lives. The lines they utter are mere expositions. Ali’s imagination doesn't respect the commonplace, and his camera needs something out of the ordinary to feel gingered up. The direction is the real problem with the show.

Verdict

Bloody Brothers is watchable, especially in scenes of its two lead actors trying to work out something from the puny material given to them. The plot is convoluted and becomes overcooked in the hands of an inept director. The show is a second-rate Hindi remake of a Western series with zero local flavour. Except for the lead actors’ performances, Bloody Brothers is hard to sit through and quite disappointing.
