Brahmastra Part One Review

Plot:

Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva, directed and written by Ayan Mukerji, is a film that has ambitious artistic intentions but falls short with its rushed narrative. The story follows Shiva, played by Ranbir Kapoor, a DJ who discovers his special power of immunity and strong connection to fire. His search for answers to his unusual abilities leads him to a string of mythological incidents that connect him to his purpose, which changes the course of his life.

Acting:

The film has an impressive ensemble cast with actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, and Nagarjuna Akkineni. They deliver stellar performances and elevate the film’s aura, despite the shortcomings of its screenplay. Ranbir tries to add emotional depth to the character of Shiva, and Alia convincingly plays Isha, his love interest. Nagarjuna Akkineni, who plays artist Anish Shetty, is an exciting addition to the film. Amitabh Bachchan’s character, Guru Ji, is also a delight to watch, and his performance adds to the film's gravitas.

Cinematography:

The film's cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee, Pankaj Kumar, Patrick Duroux, V Manikandan, and Vikash Nowlakha, captures the film's various stages in all its photogenic glory. The VFX is impeccable and makes the film a visual treat. The depiction of the astras created out of the powers of nature and mythological characters is beautiful. The film’s color palette has been created thoughtfully, and the frames brim in pyrotechnics, bokeh effects, and hues of red, blue, pink, purple, and orange, powering a blazing spectacle.

Direction:

Ayan Mukerji's direction is overambitious as he tries to blend Indian mythology and sci-fi elements in this love story, but the flawed screenplay affects the film's impact. The first half of the film feels rushed, and some of the action scenes and flashbacks to Shiva's childhood feel long-drawn and overwhelming. The dialogues by Hussain Dalal are not up to the mark and often feel cliched. The second half of the film is where the narrative takes off, and the film showcases some spectacular visuals.

Verdict:

All in all, Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva, is a well-done VFX with an attempt to show mysterious powers associated with mythological avatars while connecting it to the world with emotions and feelings about good and bad.
