Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus: A Comedy Full of Errors

Plot

Cirkus is a story of twin brothers, Roy (Ranveer Singh) and Joy (Varun Sharma) who are part of an experiment they don't know about. The film delves into adoption and upbringing, making it boring right from the start. Shetty relies on a cliched formula of a twins mix up which falls flat from the very beginning.

Acting

Ranveer Singh's ability to pull off physical comedy or say the funniest lines with a straight face is similar to his real-life reels we watch on social media. In Cirkus, however, he doesn't need a giant speaker to play music because his director fills in every frame with loud over-the-top score, bells, and whistles that are usually part of a standup gag. Unfortunately, Jacqueline Fernandez and Pooja Hegde have very little to offer. Varun Sharma's timing with Ranveer feels natural and the actor delivers punches even in the most subtle scenes.

Cinematography

Set in the picturesque green hills of Ooty and carefully created colorful and unreal set pieces that look like a theme park. The VFX in some scenes looks amateurish, and the music, unlike Shetty's previous films, is a big downer.

Direction

Rohit Shetty has carved a niche for himself with his over-the-top loud yet entertaining cop universe with Singham - Suryavanshi and Simmba. With Cirkus, he departs from the RCU and moves more towards his other successful franchise - the Golmaal series. However, the film feels outdated, and the script lacks solid writing to back the effort.

Overall Verdict

Cirkus has its moments, but as a package, it fails to give you that current ka jhatka which you expected. The screenplay offers nothing fresh in terms of comedy and punchlines and suffers from abject repetition. Collectively, barely a scene or two manage to evoke the kind of laughter we are used to experiencing in a Rohit Shetty film. The climax is genuinely funny, and Johny Lever brings in some much-needed organic laughter. However, with Cirkus, Rohit Shetty falls flat, and it's sad that we had to see Ranveer being a part of this.
