Doctor G: A Medical Campus Comedy with Heart

Plot

Doctor G follows the story of Dr Uday Gupta (played by Ayushmann Khurrana), the only male student in the gynaecology department of a medical college in Bhopal. Reluctantly enrolled after failing to secure a seat in the orthopaedic section, Uday navigates his way through hilarious situations and incidents, challenged by his own patriarchal beliefs as he questions his abilities as a gynaecologist.

Acting

Ayushmann Khurrana delivers a natural performance, bringing sincerity, humour, and believability to his character. Rakul Preet Singh lends excellent support as Uday's love interest Fatima, while Shefali Shah continues her golden run with her authoritative portrayal of department head Dr Nandini. Sheeba Chadha delivers a standout performance as Uday's progressive mother.

Cinematography

Doctor G features authentic scenes that depict typical government hospital chaos, adding a sense of realism to the story. The film balances light-hearted moments with those of a serious nature, with impactful scenes delivered on a subtle and dignified tone.

Direction

Director Anubhuti Kashyap's first mainstream film showcases her ability to bring out nuanced performances from her cast. Her storytelling is engrossing, taking audiences in a direction that makes the film a conversation-starter for all the right reasons.

Overall

Though Doctor G suffers from a slow start, the film's underlying social message shines through in its coming-of-age drama. The chemistry between the cast members, the character development, and the balance of humour with heart make Doctor G worth watching. The film is another excellent addition to the Ayushmann Khurrana formula, and Anubhuti Kashyap's potential as a director is evident. Overall, Doctor G is a medical campus comedy that delivers mirth with meaning.
