Double XL Movie Review: Plus-size women battling societal stigmas

Plot

Double XL follows the story of Rajshri Trivedi (Huma Qureshi) and Saira Khanna (Sonakshi Sinha), two plus-sized women battling societal stigmas and struggling to achieve their career ambitions in a society that judges them based on their size. They embark on a journey to London for a fashion documentary and a sports anchoring job, respectively.

Acting

Huma Qureshi delivers a powerful and emotional performance, physically transforming herself to slip into her Double XL part. Sonakshi Sinha's character, however, fails to invoke much empathy from the audience. Zaheer Iqbal's annoying portrayal of Zorawar Rehmani does little to contribute to the film.

Cinematography

The film's average execution is reflected in its forgettable soundtrack and mediocre writing. The London scenes do provide some visual relief, but it ultimately fails to capture the audience's attention and fails to address the issue of body-shaming effectively.

Direction

Director Satram Ramani deserves commendation for attempting to tackle a relevant and refreshing concept of body-shaming. However, the film's teenybopper treatment and preachy writing undermines its potential by repeatedly harping on the same point without exploring it in a fleshed-out, engaging narrative or compelling characters.

Verdict

Double XL attempts to tell a progressive, well-intentioned story but comes short due to its overbearing social commentary, mixed execution, and weak plot. While the film's premise is relevant, it fails to deliver on its promise and comes across as a half-baked attempt at addressing body-shaming in society. Overall, it's a well-intentioned dud that does more harm than good for its cause.
