Dry Day : Movie Review

Plot

Dry Day's story starts in the town of Jagodhar in Madhya Pradesh, known for its rampant alcoholism among men. The story revolves around Gannu, a henchman of the town's MLA, Dauji, who is a heavy drinker himself. Gannu's wife, Nirmala, threatens to abort their baby if he doesn't quit drinking and become responsible. To prove himself, Gannu decides to fast until death to ban alcohol in the town. His protest gains momentum and he becomes popular among the women who are tired of their husbands' alcoholism.

Acting

Jitendra Kumar delivers a strong performance as Gannu. He convincingly portrays both the loutish drunkard and the changed man in the second half. Shriya Pilgaonkar shines as Nirmala, displaying easy chemistry with Jitendra Kumar. Annu Kapoor as always does justice to his role as the politician, Dauji, playing his role with finesse. Shrikant Verma also deserves mention for his portrayal of the cunning liquor shop owner.

Cinematography

The cinematography by Adri Thakur captures the small-town vibe of Jagodhar perfectly. Wide and top angles are used effectively to showcase the town's setting. The visuals add to the authenticity of the film.

Direction

Saurabh Shukla, who also wrote the film, handles the directorial duties well. The film starts as a social satire and successfully maintains its tone for most of its running time. Shukla seamlessly transitions from comedy to a more serious tone, allowing the viewers to connect with the story. However, the plot loses its grip in the second half and falls into melodrama, which takes away from the overall impact of the film.

Conclusion

Dry Day has an interesting premise and a strong performance by Jitendra Kumar. The film effectively highlights the issue of alcoholism in a small town and the detrimental impact it has on families. However, the plot loses steam towards the end and falls into melodrama, which prevents it from reaching its full potential. Despite its flaws, Dry Day is a decent one-time watch, especially for those interested in exploring the small-town world and its quirks. Overall, Dry Day has its moments of entertainment, but it could have been more engaging and impactful. While not a masterpiece, Dry Day is a decent addition to the repertoire of small-town films.
