Gangubai Kathiawadi Review: Alia Bhatt Shines in Bhansali's Gritty Biopic

Plot

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest offering, Gangubai Kathiawadi, based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, tells the story of Gangu's meteoric rise from a naive girl sold into prostitution to becoming the undisputed queen of Kamathipura. The film showcases the challenges, opponents, and social stigma that Gangu had to face while fighting for her rights and those of the women in the infamous red-light neighbourhood.

Acting

Gangubai Kathiawadi boasts of an outstanding performance by Alia Bhatt, who slips into the role of the boss lady in a world of brothels and lustful men. While it may take a while to accept Alia in this part, she delivers fiery dialogues with supreme confidence, audacity, and a killer instinct. Ajay Devgn in a brief role as Rahim Lala also leaves a solid impact. Even the supporting cast like Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa, and Jim Sarbh put their best foot forward, although a limited screen time leaves much room for them to shine.

Cinematography

Sudeep Chatterjee deserves applause for his incredible work in capturing the dark alleys of Mumbai's red-light area with extravagance and gloss, yet managing to highlight the poignant truths about society and the lives of sex workers. Each song is masterfully and colourfully picturised, making the film a visual delight.

Direction

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's direction is incredible, with a narrative that packs a punch, leaving an impact through powerful moments and fiery dialogues. He drives his narrative much like the book, with each challenge and episode moving like a chapter. However, the film does not delve deep into any one aspect of Gangu's life, leaving us yearning to know more. The second half of the movie feels a tad self-indulgent, with too much focus on celebrating Gangubai's accomplishments, and too little emphasis on the wrong turns she made in her journey to the top.

Final Verdict

Gangubai Kathiawadi is not perfect, but it is a solid risk for both Bhansali and Alia. The film is about the choices Gangu made, and while there are enough moments that draw you into this world, many aspects of her life remain untold. The impeccable performances, incredible cinematography, and powerful direction make it a must-watch, regardless. Gangubai Kathiawadi is gritty, powerful, emotional, and delivers a compelling performance by Alia Bhatt.
