Jalsa Movie Review

Plot

Jalsa follows the story of Maya Menon, a renowned journalist who accidentally runs over Ruksana's daughter, Alia. The event turns their lives upside down and puts their moral compass to the test. The movie explores the intricacies of human behavior when pushed over the edge, and our notions of truth, morality, and survival.

Acting

Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah give outstanding performances, showing what they are made of. Vidya's portrayal of Maya Menon is strong from the outside, while she is weak and vulnerable from the inside. Shefali's eyes express most of her anger and frustration, making the audience feel for her. Acclaimed Hindi and Marathi film actress Rohini Hattangadi lends gravitas and wisdom to the proceedings, portraying Maya's mother.

Cinematography

Cinematographer Saurabh Goswami handles the two distinct spaces of Jalsa extremely well, making the swanky environs of Maya Menon's office and home and the bright lights of Mumbai look slick and the dark crannies of the city and the unvarnished, messy homes of the underclass that serves the city's middle class and elite look raw and real.

Direction

Director Suresh Triveni cleverly abstains from letting his two lead characters verbally confront each other, relying on their deafening silences and muted chaos to compel the audience to find themselves and their story. He stays away from theatrics and makes humanity's braving the storm of survival and circumstances overriding truth and conscience stir up emotions in the audience.

Final Verdict

Despite Jalsa's flaws, mostly attributed to its half-hearted character sketches and spread-out material, it is a must-watch for its powerful performances and stirring emotions. The movie is a celebration of two powerhouse performers, Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah, and the way they go for the kill and make the most of what's offered. The film puts human foibles under the scanner and articulates a few points that make sense.
