Movie Review: Janhit Mein Jaari

Plot

Janhit Mein Jaari tells the story of Manokamna Tripathi (Nushrratt Bharuccha), a young woman from a traditional family who is expected to get married after completing her education. She seeks a job before settling down and takes a job as a sales representative for a local condom company. Manokamna has to navigate through various challenges and bring her conservative family onto her side to pursue her dream.

Acting

Nushrratt Bharuccha carries the film on her shoulders confidently, with a consistent performance throughout the film. The supporting cast of mostly newcomers is also excellent, especially Brijendra Kala and Vijay Raaz.

Cinematography

The cinematography and production design of Janhit Mein Jaari are on point, with the film exploiting the picturesque setting of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh.

Direction

Jai Basantu Singh, who makes his Bollywood debut as the director of Janhit Mein Jaari, shows promise but has a long way to go as the captain of the ship.

Writing

Written by Raaj Shandilyaa, the film uses a generous dose of punchlines and witty one-liners to deliver the goods. However, the film could have been tighter, and some of the elements in the film seem a tad predictable. The romantic track between Ranjan (Anud Singh Dhaka) and Manokamna feels too sped up and lacks emotional pull.

Verdict

Janhit Mein Jaari is a witty film with its intent in the right place. It raises important issues and exhorts women to take charge of their own well-being, which is saying a lot in a conservative society where women have little power. However, the film loses its mojo in the second half and becomes heavy-handed. Overall, Janhit Mein Jaari is worth watching for its comedy and performances.
