Jersey Film Review: Shahid Kapoor stuns in this emotional father-son story

Plot

Jersey tells the story of Arjun Talwar, a former cricket star who left the sport to focus on his family. However, circumstances lead him back to the pitch, where he struggles to catch up with the expectations of his wife and son. Will he hit a six or be clean bowled in his second innings is what Jersey is about.

Acting

Shahid Kapoor's performance as Arjun is one of his best, showcasing his pain and vulnerability in staying true to Arjun’s struggles. Mrunal Thakur as Arjun’s wife Vidya played her role beautifully, while Pankaj Kapoor as the coach was outstanding. Ronit Kamra as Arjun’s son was also impressive.

Cinematography

Cinematography by Anil Mehta was exquisite, as it portrayed the passage of time between the years when Arjun is a star player, when he’s sworn to stay off the field and when he gets back into the game.

Direction

Director Gowtam Tinnanuri did an excellent job in adapting the original Telugu film to Hindi, with a faithful remake that stayed true to the original plot. The film deals with deeper issues than those that meet the eye, and Gowtam Tinnanuri delivers this message well.

Overall Review

Jersey is a solid effort by Shahid Kapoor, and it once again proves his mettle as an actor. The film is a sweet little drama that hits a home run on the strength of its heart and hero. An emotional rollercoaster, Jersey is a father-son story that hits all the right notes, and is definitely a must-watch for fans of the actor. However, the film is too long and struggles with its pace, especially in the first half. The cricket scenes in the second half also lose steam and feel repetitive. Additionally, the pace of the film is a tad sluggish overall, and there could have been more opportunities to cheer for Arjun’s character. Despite these flaws, Jersey is an inspiring and moving father-son story with exceptional acting from its cast, exquisite cinematography, and solid direction. It is a film that showcases the pain, guilt, and frustration that comes from chasing one's dreams, and a reminder that a promise can be a driving force, but also a burden.
