Plot

In a semi-rural area of Uttar Pradesh, an efficient female police inspector and her team have to hunt for two hybrid jackfruits stolen from the local MLA's home, which are crucial to his political ambitions. But the hunt takes an unexpected turn as they uncover a bigger crime against women, prompting the officer to adapt to the local political power play and save a young girl's future. Kathal explores themes of corruption, casteism, and societal inequalities with humor and satire.

Acting

Sanya Malhotra shines as the dedicated and determined police officer Mahima Basor, who navigates the absurdities and injustices of her job with wit and poise. Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, and the rest of the cast deliver hilarious performances, elevating the film's comedy and bringing authenticity to the colloquial dialogues.

Cinematography

The film captures the rustic milieu and local flavor of Uttar Pradesh, with its vibrant colors and chaotic streets. The camerawork is unobtrusive, allowing the performances and the story to take center stage.

Direction

Yashowardhan Mishra's direction has a light touch, allowing the satire to unfold gradually and subverting audience expectations. The pacing is uneven at times, but the humor and the relevant social commentary keep the audience engaged.

Music

The music of the film, composed by Ram Sampath, has a desi vibe, with only three songs that complement the film's themes and tone. Radhe Radhe is a peppy number, while Nikar Chalo Re is soothing.

Verdict

Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery is a quirky and entertaining social satire that explores the problematic relationship between the police force and the powerful politicians they serve. The film tackles relevant themes like corruption, casteism, and gender discrimination with subtlety and humor. While not perfect in execution, Kathal delivers a breezy ensemble comedy about real issues plaguing Indian society. With strong performances and a relatable story, Kathal is definitely worth a watch.
