Kathmandu Connection 2: A thrilling sequel with solid performances

Plot

Kathmandu Connection Season 2 revolves around the 1999 hijacking of IS-814 and its potential link to India's national security threat, bringing all characters together and connecting everything to Kathmandu. The story majorly gets into the entire Indo-Pak feud and terrorism. The season moves quickly, keeping the viewers on the edge of their seats with some shocking but unexpected plot twists. The climax pulls it all together and ends on a cliffhanger, leaving plenty of room for the next season. Occasionally, keeping track of every character and their actions becomes challenging, but the performances make up for it.

Acting

The performances are the highlight of the show. Prashant Narayanan’s portrayal of Wajid, inspired by the Indian drug lord, terrorist, and mafia gangster Dawood Ibrahim, proves yet again that he is a pro at playing an anti-hero. Aksha Pardasany and Anshumaan Pushkar reprise their roles convincingly. Anshumaan seamlessly executes scenes with full of action. Amit Sial’s role had a downgrade from a cop to a man trying to clear his name, but he still manages to do an excellent job with his character. Harleen Sethi, styled like a 90s heroine, looked stunning but could not provide depth to her character as an intelligence officer.

Cinematography

The title track, "Syahi Syahi" by Sneha Khanwalkar and the intense background score enhance the drama's impact. The background score and music still remain highlights with distinct vaporwave aesthetics, a metal rendition of Siyaahi, and an intense chthonic layering of the surreal soundscape, which comes to life in tandem with the portentous nature of the story.

Direction

Sachin Pathak directed the six-part series, which expands the fresco to accommodate the non-blurring lines between fiction and reality. He consciously breaks himself free from the tonality that he had employed in the first story but instead realigns himself to attempt something more challenging and ambitious. He amplifies the show's USP of blurring the lines between the fictional universe and the real historical one, even unmistakably portraying the resemblance of Wajid to Dawood Ibrahim, to stir curiosity.

Overall Verdict

The solid performances and unpredictable plot twists make Kathmandu Connection 2 a thrilling sequel. It's a decent watch, considering the enthralling performances by the actors, eargasmic background score, unpredictable twists and bends, and how it assimilates real-life events into a fictional setup. The runtime of the six-episode series works in its favour as the crisply edited show doesn't let one bat an eyelid, though the story is told too often, and there are archetypal bits that chip away the organic nature of the story. At the end of the day, Kathmandu Connection still retains uniqueness with its dynamic character arcs, a balanced ratio of partly good and partly over-the-top storyline and a rapturing build-up to the climax.
