Kaun Banegi Shikharwati: A Mediocre Blend of Humor and Drama

Plot:

Kaun Banegi Shikharwati is a 10-episode series about the bankrupt former king of Shikharwati, Raja Mrityunjay, who owes the government a staggering sum in wealth tax. To save the palace, he invites his four estranged daughters, Devyani, Gayatri, Kaamini, and Uma, to compete to become the next heir to his throne and accompanying property. The winner will be held responsible for paying off the debts and looking after the 200-crore estate.

Acting:

The performances are undoubtedly the highlight of the show. Lara Dutta is outstanding as Devyani, the oldest daughter, while Soha Ali Khan brings grace and sophistication to her role as Gayatri. Anya Singh gives a convincing performance as the shy and delicate Uma, and Kritika Kamra's portrayal of social media influencer Kaamini is charming and hilarious. Naseeruddin Shah delivers an authentic and flawless performance as the bumbling king, and Raghuvir Yadav's mastery of sarcasm and warmth is on full display as the king's advisor and custodian.

Cinematography:

The series is set in Rajasthan, and Linesh Desai's cinematography effectively captures the royal ambiance, adding authenticity to the story.

Direction:

While the director does try to inject humor into the mix, the dull treatment and one-note writing by co-director Ananya Banerjee never let the material enjoy itself. The cast does their best to elevate the series, but the writing falls flat in several areas.

Final Verdict:

While Kaun Banegi Shikharwati boasts an exciting ensemble and a decent premise about estranged daddies and daughters juggling between royalty, reunion, and rivalry, it falls short due to its one-note writing and dull treatment. The quirky characters and their stories are interesting, but the screenplay gives the impression that there is too much going on, more than what can be absorbed. However, if you're looking for a light-hearted dramedy that will bring a smile to your face, then Kaun Banegi Shikharwati might just fit the bill.
