Movie Review: Laal Singh Chaddha

Plot

Laal Singh Chaddha is a loyal Hindi adaptation of the iconic Hollywood film, Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks. The film chronicles the life of Laal Singh Chaddha, a slow-witted man who stumbles through life, believing in the power of kindness and miracles. The story is narrated in flashbacks to a train compartment full of eager listeners, as Laal recounts his tough childhood, life milestones, accidental wealth, wars fought, and the friends he made along the way.

Acting

Aamir Khan plays the titular character, Laal Singh Chaddha, a mamma's boy, childhood sweetheart's bestie, and a fellow soldier's future partner-in-hosiery business. He portrays the character's physical appearance with de-aging technology, and his over-the-top yet heartwarming storytelling with Punjabi accent and PK's body language. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays Rupa, Laal's love interest, and delivers a beautiful performance, displaying shades of a sensitive soul and a wiser version of Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine. Mona Singh portrays Laal's mother with courage and compassion, while Ahman Ibn Umar as young Laal steals hearts with his subtle expressions. Naga Chaitanya as Bala and Manav Vij as Mohammed do justice to their roles, making the film's characters memorable.

Cinematography

Shot extensively across India, Laal Singh Chaddha delivers cathartic and outstanding visuals, particularly in the song "Tur Kalleyan." The film's timeline covers historic events, and the cinematography blends well with the narrative. However, the character's personal timeline appears inconsistent, making the film a bit off at times.

Direction

Directed by Advait Chandan of Secret Superstar fame, Laal Singh Chaddha stays true to Forrest Gump's essence while localizing events. The film's screenplay, adapted by Atul Kulkarni, merges facts and fiction, aligning the fictional story to India's socio-political and cultural context. Chandan creates a faithful but lengthy adaptation that makes a clever commentary on India's political landscape. Despite not introducing anything new or exceptional, the film delivers good old values that make it a worthy family watch.

Verdict

Laal Singh Chaddha succeeds in pulling at heartstrings and narrating a lovingly crafted individualistic, melodious ode to the schmaltzy school of film-making. The film speaks the language of sentimentality, and its mood, mind and manner make it distinctly its own and fitting seamlessly within an Indian context and history. While Aamir Khan tries a bit too hard with his character's over-the-top style, Kareena Kapoor Khan delivers a beautiful performance and Manav Vij as Mohammed gets the tone of Forrest Gump right, adding to the film's merits.
