Lost Movie Review: An Investigation That Falls Short

Plot

Lost is the story of crime journalist Vidhi Sahani (Yami Gautam) who investigates the disappearance of a young man named Ishan Bharti. As she delves deeper, she discovers murky connections between Ishan's girlfriend Ankita (Pia Bajpayee) and politician Ranjan Varman (Rahul Khanna). The story touches upon issues such as corruption, patriarchy and naxal terror, but fails to stick the landing with a lacklustre climax and loose ends.

Acting

Yami Gautam delivers a solid performance as the determined Vidhi Sahani, while Pankaj Kapur shines as her supportive grandfather. Rahul Khanna impresses as the suave politician, and Pia Bajpayee has potential but her character lacks depth. Neil Bhoopalam is wasted in a forgettable role.

Cinematography

Cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay captures the vibrant streets of Kolkata with finesse, but falls short of turning the city into a character like Kahaani.

Direction

Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's painfully inert storytelling and garbled script make it difficult to care about the characters or the issues they are grappling with. The film overplays Vidhi's virtue and fails to dwell deeper into the conversations concerning human rights, extremist groups or political-media nexus.

Conclusion

Lost has a relevant premise but fails to deliver on its potential. Its sole purpose is to overplay Vidhi's virtue without fulfilling the promise of complexity and nuance. While the performances are solid, they can't compensate for a half-baked script and clumsy direction. If you're a fan of Yami Gautam, Lost is worth a watch for her performance, otherwise, it's a missed opportunity.
