MAI Review: A Compelling Crime Thriller with Some Loopholes

Plot

Mai revolves around a mother's quest to avenge her daughter's death and bring the culprits to justice. Sheel Chaudhary (Sakshi Tanwar) is a middle-aged woman who finds herself entangled in a web of deceit and crime after her daughter Supriya (Wamiqa Gabbi) meets with an accident. She is on a mission to uncover the truth behind her daughter's tragic death.

Acting

The series boasts of a talented cast, with Sakshi Tanwar delivering a rock-solid performance as Sheel Chaudhary. She portrays the emotions of a grieving mother with ease and makes the audience empathize with her character. Ankur Ratan, who plays Farooque Siddiqui, the Special Police Force Officer, also delivers a convincing performance.

Cinematography

The series is set in Lucknow and the cinematography captures the essence of the city beautifully. The sepia-toned frames add to the bleak, lifeless mood of the characters, making them appear desolate and vulnerable.

Direction

Mai is directed by Atul Mongia and Anshai Lal, and the two have done an exceptional job at extracting powerful performances from the cast. They manage to build and maintain the tension of the storyline, keeping the audience engaged throughout.

Writing

The series is written by Atul Mongia, Amita Vyas, and Tamal Sen. The plot is intriguing, although the script seems unduly stretched at times, making it slow and tedious. There are too many characters, and not all of them get enough screen time to justify their existence.
