Plot

Mithya is a psychological thriller adapted from the British Web series Cheat. The series follows the life of Hindi professor Juhi Adhikari (Huma Qureshi) at Oakhill Estate University, who suspects her student, Rhea (Avantika Dassani), of plagiarism. What begins as an academic dispute escalates into complex psychological warfare with hints of crime, leading to the ultimate unraveling of 'Mithya'.

Acting

Huma S Qureshi and debutante Avantika Dassani impress with their intense acts. Qureshi delivers a refined eloquence, while Dassani sinks her teeth into a meaty role as the rebellious Rhea Rajguru. However, the corny tone of Rhea's sexually-explicit character insults Dassani's intelligence. The supporting cast, including Rajit Kapoor and Parambrata Chatterjee, also deliver commendable performances.

Cinematography

Darjeeling's picturesque grandeur adds to the beauty of the screenplay, with captivating scenes of overcast weather, rains, and the greenery of the Himalayan foothills. Ripul Sharma and George Joseph's background music effectively blends with the plot.

Direction

Rohan Sippy should have made Mithya a tight 90-minute film instead of stretching it to almost 180 minutes. The series fumbles to make headway towards truth or dare, and the treatment of the truth or the various themes it explores remains muddled.

Verdict

Mithya is not a spine-chilling psychodrama that will blow your mind but instead, an entirely addictive thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked. While the series has an interesting plot, commendable acting, and captivating cinematography, its convoluting narrative lets it down. Overall, Mithya is a one-time watch, but it could have been so much better with a more concise script.
