Pinky Beauty Parlour Review: A Poignant Tale of Discrimination and Beauty Standards

Plot

‘Pinky Beauty Parlour’ is a story about two sisters from a small town in Varanasi, India. The sisters, Pinky and Bulbul, have been compared since childhood due to their skin colour, with Pinky being Fair and Bulbul having a dark complexion. The film explores how Bulbul faces discrimination and insults due to her skin colour and how she tries hard to manage her beauty parlour to support her employees and her sister’s career, all while dealing with the societal pressure of conforming to beauty standards.

Acting

The cast of ‘Pinky Beauty Parlour’ delivers great performances, making the story feel authentic and relatable. Sulagna Panigrahi as Pinky looks pretty and desirable, whereas Khushboo Gupta’s portrayal of Bulbul is emotionally moving. Akshay Singh, who also directed the film, plays Dulaal, a character with a significant impact on both sisters’ lives. The rest of the cast also plays their parts well.

Cinematography

Gagandeep Singh’s cinematography masterfully portrays small-town Varanasi settings, with a special emphasis on street food, lending authenticity to the story. The cinematography adds to the film's relatable and realistic setting and makes the audience empathize with the characters.

Direction

Akshay Singh’s direction makes it easy for viewers to relate to the story and characters. The storytelling is simple yet poignant, making it easy for individuals who have been in similar situations to feel seen and understood. The film’s screenplay is its biggest strength, and the believable performances and small-town setting add to its authenticity.

Overall Impression

‘Pinky Beauty Parlour’ is a must-watch for people who understand the societal pressure to conform to beauty standards. The film clearly shows that "Beauty Lies in the Eyes of the Beholder," as Plato famously stated. It highlights how our society is obsessed with fair skin, which has a negative impact on many people. The film is engaging from the start, making the audience think about how careless words can have a significant impact on others.
