RK/Rkay: Movie Review

Plot

RK/Rkay, a crowdfunded film, follows the story of Indie film director-writer RK (Rajat Kapoor) who struggles to piece his film together on the editing table after his lead character Mehboob (Mahboob Alam) vanishes from the film’s footage and enters real life. The film dabbles with the thought of what happens when fictional characters consider themselves to be real individuals.

Acting

All the actors in RK/Rkay, including Rajat Kapoor, Mallika Sherawat, Ranvir Shorey, Kubbra Sait, and Manu Rishi Chadha, make this self-reflective dramedy an interesting watch. Kapoor's protagonist, RK, is more real when conversing with the screen characters he wrote as opposed to his understanding wife. Highlighting the struggles of filmmakers and their characters, the performances are commendable.

Cinematography

RK/Rkay boasts a playful rhythm that adds to its occasional bouts of self-indulgence. The film continuously breaches the wall between the two worlds of real and imaginary, with interesting backgrounds and sets that maintain a level of wit and creativity.

Direction

Written and directed by Rajat Kapoor, RK/Rkay speaks of the inner turmoil faced by a director who is expected to constantly compromise on his creative freedom. Through the film, Kapoor debunks the rosy perception of filmmaking with a satirical self-talk rather than a broader commentary on the workings of the film industry. He sustains a level of wit and flair that serves the film well when in danger of swerving off a settled course.

Final Verdict

RK/Rkay is an experimental yet modest and relatable movie. While it may not set out to send across a message or make a profound point, it is consistently intriguing and boasts a steady flow of wry wit and humor.
