Review of SonyLiv's Salt City
Plot
Salt City follows the journey of the Bajpai family, who moved from Lucknow to Mumbai decades ago and have lost touch with their roots in this vast and rustic city. The series explores the effects of generational differences and shifting perspectives on families, as parents' expectations of their children collide with the realities of larger cities. The show has numerous subplots, such as Harish's relationship and comfort with Vibha Bhatnagar and Saurabh's affair with neighboring girl Sulekha. However, the plot is disjointed from the beginning and takes too long to unfold.Acting
Piyush Mishra gives a fantastic performance as the patriarch Harish, who is irritable and hostile in a passive-aggressive way. However, his toxic behavior has a negative impact on the family members, leaving the viewers wondering why he can't just go back to his hometown of Lucknow if he has so many problems with the metropolis. The moments Saurabh and Ela share on-screen steal the heart out of the entire show. Their bond is the strongest of them all, and their character arcs are well-written.Cinematography
The show's cinematography captures Mumbai's gritty and chaotic essence, adding to the show's depiction of how the city adds salt to everything. The production design beautifully showcases the juxtaposition between the Bajpai family's traditional values and Mumbai's modernity.Direction
Salt City is helmed by Rishabh Anupam Sahay, who manages to bring out the complexities of family dynamics through different family members' perspectives. However, the slow pace of the show and the lack of character development make it difficult to engage with the story fully. Conclusion
Salt City has the potential to be a compelling drama about how patriarchy and lack of communication can affect a family, but it falls short due to its one-dimensional characters and slow pace. The show's strongest elements are its cinematography and the performances of Piyush Mishra, Divyendu Sharma, and Monica Chaudhary. If the show gets a second season, it should delve deeper into each character's individuality and make them more relatable to the viewers.Share this review
