Review: Scam 2003: The Telgi Story
Plot
After the success of 'Scam 1992,' Hansal Mehta brings us 'Scam 2003,' a series centered around the infamous stamp paper scam orchestrated by Abdul Karim Telgi. The story follows Telgi's journey from being a fruit vendor to becoming the mastermind behind a multi-crore scam. It explores his exploration of system loopholes and his rise to wealth, while also delving into his personal life.
Acting
Gagan Dev Riar delivers a superb performance as Abdul Karim Telgi. He portrays his character with great finesse, capturing the mannerisms and the Hyderabadi Bombay lingo with credibility. The supporting cast, including talented actors like Bharat Jadhav, Nandu Madhav, and Bharat Dabholkar, enhance the series.
Cinematography
The series effectively recreates the Mumbai of the 1990s, immersing the audience in a nostalgic setting. The absence of mobile phones and social media adds to the unique charm of the show. The cinematography captures the essence of the time period, creating a visually appealing experience for the viewers.
Direction
Director Tushar Hiranandani does a commendable job of bringing together all the elements of Telgi's life. The series maintains a steady pace, keeping the audience engaged throughout. However, the idea to split the story into two seasons when the interest starts building in might not be justified and could be disappointing for the viewers.
Impressions
'Scam 2003' continues the legacy of its predecessor, 'Scam 1992,' with its gripping storytelling and strong performances. Gagan Dev Riar shines as Abdul Karim Telgi, captivating the audience with his portrayal of the conman turned criminal. The series authentically portrays Telgi's rise to power and the corruption within the system that allowed him to continue his illegal activities for years. While not as fascinating as 'Scam 1992,' the stamp paper scam depicted in 'Scam 2003' reveals the underlying rot in our society and the need for accountability.
Overall
'Scam 2003: The Telgi Story' is a compelling series that sheds light on an important chapter in Indian history. Its engaging plot, strong performances, and nostalgic setting make it a must-watch for fans of true crime dramas. Despite certain shortcomings, the series does justice to the narratives and a thoughtful conversion into a story.
