Movie Review - Wish
Plot
Wish is a Disney movie that takes us back to the classic fairy tale formula. It follows the story of Asha, a young teenager who discovers that the king of her town is a fraud. With the help of a magical star, she sets out on a mission to free her town from the evil king's control. The plot is simple and straightforward, without any surprising twists or layers. It is a mindless, decent watch that brings back teenage nostalgia.
Acting
The voice acting in Wish is commendable, with Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine bringing life to the main characters. The supporting cast also does a decent job in giving voice to their respective characters. Alan Tudyk stands out as the speaking goat, Valentino, providing comedic relief throughout the film.
Cinematography
The visuals in Wish are captivating, with the use of a watercolor storybook CG look. The blend of 3-D animation with watercolor style adds a nostalgic touch to the film. The animation is well-executed, and the film looks stunning in a 3D viewing.
Direction
Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, Wish follows the classic Disney formula, using all the tropes to create a magical film. While it may feel like a forgettable film in the bigger canvas of Disney's character universe, it successfully brings back the nostalgia of older Disney movies. The directors have done a decent job in recreating the age-old formulas and capturing the essence of Disney magic.
Conclusion
Wish is a movie that will appeal primarily to children and those who have grown up watching Disney movies. It may not be one of Disney's best works, but it is still a one-time watch. The plot is simple and lacks depth, but the visuals and voice acting make up for it. The film serves as a reminder of the magic in life's simple joys and hope to have a miracle. While it may not leave a lasting impact, Wish is an entertaining film for a younger audience.
