Good Bad Girl: A Review

Plot

Good Bad Girl follows the life of Maya Ahuja, a mischievous and pathological liar who will go to any length to get what she wants. The story is portrayed in three different timelines: her childhood, law student years, and her job as a lawyer. Maya eventually fabricates a cancer diagnosis to keep her job, leading to a chain of lies and deceit that forms the crux of the series. While the concept is unique and interesting, the show's lackluster screenplay fails to make Maya's story engaging and interesting.

Acting

Samridhi Dewan shines in the lead role, portraying Maya's eccentricity and complexity with ease. Her performance is convincing and raw, particularly in intense and realistic scenes. However, other characters such as Vaibhav Raj Gupta's Sahil Mistry and Zain Khan Durrani as Prithvi Banerjee fail to leave a lasting impact.

Cinematography

Aakash Agarwal's cinematography captures captivating shots that focus more on expressions than the backdrop. The use of retro Dairy Milk chocolates and nostalgia also adds levity to the series.

Direction

Abhishek Sengupta's direction has a keen eye for details and a subtle nuance to the treatment of less talked about themes such as micro-traumas from childhood. However, the series falls prey to stagnation midway and loses its charm, picking up only towards the end.

Verdict

Good Bad Girl may have a unique concept and engaging lead performance, but it fails to keep viewers invested throughout its nine-episode run. Maya as a character has no redeeming qualities nor any plausible reasons for her behavior, making it difficult to root for her. While the writing could have been sharper and funnier, the show is a decent watch for those looking for a break from crime-based dramas.
