Govinda Naam Mera : Movie Review

Plot:

Govinda Naam Mera, starring Vicky Kaushal, revolves around Govinda Waghmare who is trying to sell his ancestral house amidst his complicated relationships with his dominating wife and dancer girlfriend. When he gets embroiled in a situation that involves a dead body, he becomes the prime suspect. The film starts looking like one gag followed by another with no attempt to sound cohesive.

Acting:

Vicky Kaushal aces every scene, giving it his all with his energy and comic timing. Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar perform earnestly in their roles, but their characters could have been developed more. Renuka Shahane as Govinda's paralysed, wheelchair-bound mother is a pure dramebaaz. Amey Wagh and Trupti Khamkar are both naturally funny characters.

Cinematography:

The film is set in Mumbai, and the background score is designed interestingly and blends in with the story's tone. The upbeat songs, Kyaa Baat Haii 2.0 and Bijli, will get you grooving.

Direction:

Shashank Khaitan, known for the dulhania movies commits a crime with Govinda Naam Mera despite having a troika of skilful actors at his disposal. The heavily polygamous vibe of its posters, evoking Saajan Chale Sasural and Gharwali Baharwali, is just a front for this black comedy that has more twists than timepass on its mind. The film tries so hard to be fun that it forgets to have any cohesion.

Review:

Govinda Naam Mera attempts to capture the zest and energy of Govinda but falls short with a plot that is scattered and a story that is meaningless at times. The film is a mix of murder mystery, caper and drama which should have pulled the audience in, but fails to do so. Despite having a bunch of good performers, the film is reduced to a rather silly whodunit with a flat narrative, storyline that never has a single track to follow and humour that is so sporadic. Govinda Naam Mera might look very refreshing on the set with Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar trying to portray characters that we haven't really seen them play in the past, but the poor story and execution fails these actors at many levels. If you are looking for a breezy film that entertains with ample laughter, confusion and comedy, Govinda Naam Mera might just be it. However, do not go in with high expectations or you might be left disappointed.
