Hypnotic - Movie Review
Plot
"Hypnotic" tells the story of Detective Daniel Rourke who investigates the disappearance of his daughter and uncovers a secret government program involving hypnotism. The film explores the theory of hypnosis and a father's determination to reunite his family in a world where reality is constantly shifting.
Acting
The performances in "Hypnotic" are average with Ben Affleck portraying Detective Daniel Rourke. Although his performance lacks as compared to his previous ones, Alice Braga shines as Diana Cruz, justifying the responsibility to her role. Unfortunately, William Fichtner's character is limited to just like any other villain.
Cinematography
The cinematography of "Hypnotic" is visually appealing, capturing the delirium and distorted reality caused by hypnosis. The use of spherical camera lenses adds to the disorienting effect and helps to distinguish between different states of consciousness.
Direction
Director Robert Rodriguez is known for his unconventional narratives and imaginative visuals. However, "Hypnotic" keeps trying to execute its complicated concept but fails everytime, resulting in a confusing and puzzling experience. The pacing of the film picks up after thirty minutes but quickly loses the initial excitement.
Conclusion
Overall, "Hypnotic" has an intriguing premise that initially captivates audiences but falls short as things start unfolding making audience left confused. Despite some moments of intrigue, the film demands intense concentration and taxes the audience's brain rather than helping them navigate the storyline. While the climax delivers a startling revelation, it feels arbitrary and lacks direction. "Hypnotic" may be enjoyed by those who have low expectations.
