Review of "The Archies"

Plot

The movie "The Archies" is a colorful and sweet adaptation of the beloved Archie Comics. Set in the fictional hill station of Riverdale in India in 1964, the story based on Archie and his friends's journey as they navigate friendship, romance, and social responsibility. The group faces a threat when developers plan to demolish their cherished park to build a hotel. The plot showcases the characters' coming-of-age experiences and their determination to save their beloved park.

Acting

The young cast of "The Archies" does an impressive job in making the characters their own. Suhana Khan shines with her screen presence and perfectly captures the coquettish diva persona of Veronica Lodge. Vedang Raina, bearing a striking resemblance to Ranveer Singh, shows promising talent and delivers a great performance as Reggie Mantle. Other newcomers, such as Dot and Yuvraj Menda, also impress with their charm and talent. While Agastya Nanda and Khushi Kapoor look cute with their sunshine smiles, they could have displayed more depth in their performances. Mihir Ahuja, known from "Made in Heaven Season 2," shines in his role as Jughead Jones, although the writing for his character falls short.

Cinematography

The cinematography in "The Archies" is visually stunning. Director of Photography Nikos Andritsakis captures the essence of the 1960s setting with sun-kissed visuals, showcasing pretty pastel skies, flower beds, and colonial grandeur. The outdoor scenes brim with an idyllic beauty, while the indoor settings portray the lifestyle of both the affluent and modest with Zoya Akhtar's trademark sophistication. The production design by Suzanne Caplan Merwanji accurately illustrates the cozy charm of the original Archie Comics.

Direction

Zoya Akhtar's direction in "The Archies" successfully adapts the beloved comic book characters for the big screen. The movie carries forward the legacy of the Archies in a vintage avatar, while also promoting themes of love, coexistence, and youthful activism. Akhtar skillfully incorporates smart allegories into her storytelling, mirroring real-world issues and reminding viewers of the importance of standing up for what they believe in.

Conclusion

"The Archies" is a colorful and entertaining teen musical comedy that successfully adapts the beloved Archie Comics for the big screen. Director Zoya Akhtar's vision and attention to detail shine through in her preservation of the characters' familiar look and essence. While the movie lacks some of the comic's humor, it offers a nostalgic trip down memory lane for longtime fans and introduces a new generation to the world of the Archies. With its visually stunning cinematography, catchy soundtrack, and heartfelt storyline, "The Archies" is a must-watch for fans of the comic series and anyone seeking a lighthearted and enjoyable cinematic experience.
